Tracy Springberry “A Matter of Faith”

The word “faith” and its cousin “belief” are challenging words for many Unitarian Universalists. Often we associate “religious belief” with a person’s intellectual confidence that, for example, that God exists. We then associate “faith” with “believing” in such ideas even when no logical evidence exists for their truth. However, the Hebrew word that is translated in modern Bibles as “faith” does not mean “belief in something without evidence” but means “steadfastness.” What might Unitarian Universalists hold to steadfastly?

Bio: Tracy Springberry is a candidate for the Unitarian Universalist ministry, and will become a fellowshipped UU minister in May when she graduates from seminary. She lives in Spokane with her three teenaged sons, her 15 month old daughter and her partner. She also has a master’s degree in writing, works professionally as a grant writer, and is co-editor of the essay collection, “At Work in Life’s Garden: Writers on the Spiritual Adventure of Parenting.”
